In 2009, Matt Robinson and the splendidly named Tom Wrigglesworth were awarded D&AD's 'Best New Blood' award in recognition of their HP - invent film, which showcased their filming, editing and directing talents via the medium of synchronised HP printouts married with some techno beats.
They've been tinkering with their printers again, and building on the back of the success of their original efforts, Tom and Matt created have been commissioned by HP to create this new mini masterpiece, entitled 'HP - Hit print'.
In terms of due diligence, we think they should be awarded full marks for both films - the time and dedication required to complete this kind of project is nothing short of remarkable. From a creative perspective though, we actually prefer their original film. It might be the fact that the initial film 'HP - invent', as the first incarnation of this concept - and although somewhat cruder than its successor - was a fresh idea that captured our attention. It might also be that we're savvy consumers; we know when we're being sold an idea or a lifestyle, which detracts somewhat from the overall 'experience'. Or it might just be that 'HP - invent' was simply a better execution of the brief.
But what 'HP Hit Print' does prove is what a great platform D&AD is still providing for young creatives, and how it continues to unearth new, fresh talent for an industry that thrives and survives on innovation.
